How many blocks are needed to complete a full cube?
I’ve seen this picture circulating on my Facebook news feed for a while now. I must confess that it really took a while before I figured out the correct answer for this.
What’s a cube?
A cube is a a symmetrical three-dimensional shape, either solid or hollow, contained by six equal squares.
For example, take a look at the Rubik’s cubes below. All of them have six sides. The width, the length, and the height has the same measurement.
How many blocks are needed to complete a full cube?
Answer: 45
At first, you might think that the answer is 20. It’s wrong. Filling it with 20 blocks won’t give you a cube because the sides won’t be equal. The width and the length is composed of 5 blocks but the height is just four blocks. This means that we need to add another 25 blocks the top to make it a cube. The correct answer is actually 45.
