The 18th UP ComBroadSoc Gandingan Awards recognizes outstanding media work and personalities with a special emphasis on agriculture. This prestigious award program, organized by the UP Community Broadcasters’ Society, remains unique as the only student-organization-led and university-based award-giving initiative dedicated to development-oriented media.
“Agrikultura: Mga Kuwento ng Hamon at Pag-asa”
The awards ceremony, which took place on May 4, 2024, was held at the Charles Fuller Baker Memorial Hall. The theme for this year, “Agrikultura: Mga Kuwento ng Hamon at Pag-asa,” showed the challenges and hopes within the agricultural sector.
Recognizing Media Excellence
The Gandingan Awards reviewed 200 entries from 28 media networks and platforms. These entries captured the pressing issues faced by farmers, fisherfolk, and other concerned groups. Through compelling stories, media practitioners shed light on the complexities of agriculture and its impact on the nation.
Advocacy for Genuine Agrarian Reform
This year’s entries echoed the call for genuine agrarian reform and fair compensation for farmers. The struggles of those who worked the land were vividly portrayed, emphasizing the need for sustainable agricultural practices and equitable land distribution.
Food Security and Rising Prices
The looming concern over food security and the increasing prices of agricultural commodities took center stage. Media narratives explored the delicate balance between meeting the nation’s food needs and ensuring economic viability for farmers.
Environmental Challenges
Fishers and foresters faced significant challenges, including deforestation, overfishing, territorial disputes, and the depletion of natural resources. The Gandingan Awards spotlighted these environmental issues, urging media practitioners to advocate for responsible resource management.
Cultural Performances
The awarding ceremony featured cultural performances by Filipino talents. From the soulful melodies of Talahib People’s Music to the vibrant dances of UPLB Sandayaw Cultural Group, attendees experienced the essence of Filipino culture.
Supporting Public Service
Limited seats were available for sale, with proceeds benefiting a public service activity in collaboration with Pambansang Kilusan ng mga Samahang Magsasaka (PAKISAMA), a 35-year-old national movement and confederation of family farmer organizations.
The Gandingan Awards served as a beacon, urging media practitioners to prioritize development-oriented reporting. By amplifying the voices of farmers, fisherfolk, and environmental advocates, they contributed to the betterment of Filipino lives.
