You’ve never been to Seoul if you haven’t seen the Gwanghwamun Square. Since most of the tourist visit the famous Gyeongbukgung Palace, seeing the Gwanghwamun square is expected.
If you’re going to Gyeongbukgung Palace, I strongly suggest that you get off at Gwanghwamun Station. Although is farther than taking the Gyeongbukgung Station, you’ll get a change to see some tourist attractions like Gwanghwamun Square, and Cheonggyecheon Stream.
Things to see:
1. The Statue of King Sejong
It’s a golden statue in the middle of the plaza. I’ve been there many times. And in all those times, I always see people trying to talk pictures with it. *Trivia* There’s a mini museum at the bottom of King Sejong’s statue. By the way, he invented Hangeul, the Korean alphabet.
2. The Statue of Admiral Yi Sun-shin.
This admiral is known for his military achievements during Imjin war. If you go there at night, you’ll see colorful fountains!
3. 40th Anniversary Monument of Gojong’s Enthronement
Who is Gojong? He’s the one who became a king at the age of 11! How? Don’t worry. His father ruled for him. LOL.
4. Gwanghwamun Gate
Gwanghwamun Gate is the Main Gate of Gyeongbukgung Palace.
How to go there:
There are two options using the subway.
- Take Seoul subway line 3 (orange line) and get off at Gyeongbukgung Station.
- Take Seoul Subway subway line 5 (purple line) and get off at Gwanghwamun Station.
